The Constitution of the Republic of Iceland (1944, as amended in 1995) states at Art. 69: "A law prescribing the death penalty must never be enacted."
On November 10, 2004, Iceland ratified Protocol No 13 to the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms banning the death penalty in all circumstances. It entered into force on March 1, 2005. Iceland co-sponsored the resolution on the death penalty approved by the UN Commission on Human Rights on April 20, 2005.
