The death sentences given to two young Russians on the island of Zanzibar (part of Tanzania) will not be carried out because there is a moratorium on the death penalty in this African state, the Russian ambassador to Tanzania Doku Zavgayev told ITAR-TASS.
He said that from the very beginning of the examination of the criminal case against Ivan Ochirov and Dmitriy Kosyakov, who were accused by the local authorities of killing a Russian citizen, Aleksey Sotnikov, in 1997, the Russian embassy in Tanzania has been doing everything to ensure that their rights are protected.
The head of the diplomatic mission emphasized that in the current circumstances the embassy's main task is "to ensure a fair trial and a just verdict".
