the European Commission renewed a call for Libya to act to secure the release of five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor sentenced to death in an AIDS-tainted blood scandal. 
The European Union's executive made the appeal as the north African country's parliament called for the heaviest possible punishment for those responsible in the case, in which nearly 400 children were infected with the deadly virus.
"We would like everything to be done by the Libyan authorities to put an end to this situation as fast as possible," said commission spokeswoman Francoise Le Bail.
"The commission has make the utmost effort for the liberation of the nurses and (is) pleading for a fast solution to this problem," she added. At their trial in May, all six defendants pleaded not guilty to infecting 380 children with the AIDS virus and causing the death of 46 others in a children's hospital in Benghazi, northern Libya.
