The European Union called on the authorities of Georgia to spare the life of Alexander Edmund Williams, a death row inmate, mentally ill and juvenile offender, facing electrocution on August 24. During a meeting in Atlanta with Mr. Walter S. Ray, Chair of the State Board of Pardons and Paroles of Georgia, the Consul General of France, the current president of the European Union, conveyed an EU message urging the members of the Board to take the decision to commute the sentence "to any penalty other than capital punishment". Williams was convicted of the abduction, rape and murder of Aleta Carol Bunch in 1986 when he was only 17 years old.
