the execution of death-row prisoner P. Chandran scheduled for early in the morning was halted, after a reprieve by the Sultan of Johor following pleas from the family. Chandran's brother Thamotharan said he received a phone call day before from an official of the Prisons Department. "They told me that the sentence has been postponed and that the authorities would look into the case. I was also informed that the decision to postpone his sentence came following orders from the Sultan of Johor yesterday evening," he said, adding that the entire family was extremely grateful to the Sultan.
Chandran, then 29, was sentenced to death in 2008 after a Johor Baru High Court convicted him for the murder of K. Muthuraman Krishnasamy, 36, by slashing him with a parang in Taman Puteri Wangsa, Ulu Tiram, in July 2003. The court found that Chandran and 11 others, who were still at large, had attacked the victim following an argument over a CD player. Chandran's appeals at the Appeals and Federal Courts were dismissed.
