Speight was initially sentenced to be hanged but Fijian President Ratu Josefa Iloilo reduced the sentence to life, on the recommendation of the country's Mercy Commission.
Speight's family has made it clear they feel cheated by the judiciary, because they expected the commission to grant a conditional pardon.
