the Federal High Court of Ethiopia sentenced Major Desta Awulachew to death. The major was accused of genocide during the old military regime of Higher 22, an old district of Addis Ababa. According to the verdict, Desta committed the crime when he was a member of the Committee of Decisions of the Red Terror. He had assumed the function of president of the Committee of Coordination of the Revolutionary Campaign and of the President of Higher 22. According to the court, Desta allegedly killed 55 people and tortured another 57, not counting the 949 people he detained illegally.
