The Fiji government walked out of parliament following allegations made by Labour Party parliamentarian Lekh Ram Vayeshnoi that Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase was also behind the May 2000 coup.
Vayeshnoi made these comments during the debate on the bill to abolish the death penalty from the Penal Code and substitute it with life imprisonment.
Vayeshnoi withdrew his statement. However the Speaker, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, allowed him to go on, because according to the Speaker the events of the 19 May [2000] coup were within the context of the debate of the bill. Following this, the government side walked out in protest of the Ratu Epeli Nailatikau's ruling.
