The files of those who were sentenced to death on charges of terrorism will be reviwed after Turkey abolished the death sentence except for the "crimes committed in times of war and situations of imminent war".
The reviewing process started after the European Union (EU) Adjustment Bill took effect on August 9 on being published in the Official Gazette.
The bill lifted the death sentence for crimes of terrorism and commuted capital punishment to life imprisonment. Terrorism convicts whose capital punishment is commuted to life imprisonment, will stay in jail till their death.
Of the case files to be reviewed, those already sent to parliament will have priority. There are currently 60 files waiting in the parliament pertaining convicts guilty of "treachery to country".
There are also files concerning 16 people sentenced to death on charges of "attempting to change constitutional order by force".
The file concerning Abdullah Ocalan, the head of the terrorist organization, will be sent to Ankara State Security Court (DGM) No 2 after going through the Justice Ministry.
The Ministry will renew calls for extradition refused by European countries because of the existence of the death sentence.
Turkey wants the extradition of Fehriye Erdal, a suspect in the murder of businessman Ozdemir Sabanci; of Dursun Karatas, one of the high level administrators of DHKP-C [Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front, banned extreme-left urban guerrilla group], and Metin Kaplan, known as "Black Voice".
