Turkey's Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit said that authorities should be extremely careful in order to prevent Turkey's EU reforms from harming Turkey's national integrity.
Ecevit said that his administration had achieved a significant result in bringing PPK leader Abdullah Ocalan to Turkey, and the abolition of the death penalty as part of the EU reform package cannot be used by the [pre-death penalty] Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) to label him traitor.
"We brought Ocalan to Turkey and tried him. This shows how determined we are in these issues. Since my youth, I've always been against death penalty.
My old party, the People's Republican Party (CHP) was against it and the Democratic Left Party (DSP) was also against it. We always opposed to capital punishment even before there was the PKK."
