The final version of the report on Armenia, submitted to the monitoring commission of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, established that the country made definite progress in meeting its commitments to the Council of Europe.
MP Armen Roustamian, who represented Armenia at the PACE, said the delay of the abolition of death penalty in Armenia especially worries the CE.
"The CE knows very well to what internal political consequences it may lead, but they cannot make exceptions", he said. The parliamentarian mentioned that within 3 months Armenia must give an official reply on this issue.
Several political forces in Armenia are against the death penalty, and some politicians have called for the execution of terrorists convicted of an attack on parliament in 1999.
