The governor of the southern Afghan province of Kandahar, Gul Agha, called a mass meeting at the site of Taliban executions to pledge loyalty to Kabul.
Thousands of Afghans gathered in the Kandahar sports stadium to hear local leaders call for the return of ex-King Zahir Shah and the establishment of a loya jirga, or tribal grand council, to decide Afghanistan's future.
Addressing the crowd, Azizullah Wasifi, an aide to the former Afghan monarch said Afghans belonging to the vanquished Taliban should be permitted to live quietly, but foreign members of the austere movement that ruled Afghanistan for six years should be put on trial and executed.
