The Greens' human rights expert, Claudia Roth, said the election of George W. Bush as the 43rd US president is a bad sign for human rights in the United States. Bush used executions in Texas deliberately as an election campaign instrument, the chairwoman of the Bundestag Human Rights Committee said. An above-average number of executions took place there and not a single person was pardoned. After this "election campaign hit", the fight against the death penalty will become even more difficult, she stressed. Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer (Greens) must now quickly place the issue of capital punishment on the agenda, Roth demanded.
