The Guangzhou City Intermediate People's Court in south China handed down two death sentences, one of which was suspended for two years, and 10 jail terms ranging from 3 years to life, for the killing of a young man whilst in police custody.
It was alleged that Sun Zhigang, a designer and not a resident of Guangzhou, had been detained by police for the seemingly minor offence of failing to produce a temporary residence certificate.
After a day in detention, Sun complained of feeling ill and asked for medical treatment. While in the penitentiary clinic, Sun was beaten up by eight other patients and subsequently died.
Qiao Yanqin, a staff member of the clinic, was sentenced to death, while Li Haiying, one of the patients who carried out the beating, received a death sentence with a two-year reprieve.
Li's lawyer had previously argued that it should serve as a mitigating circumstance for his client that he had been forced to beat up Sun. Chinese police have long been accused of ordering prisoners to beat up other inmates that are out of favour.
