The Guangzhou Intermediate People's Court held a hearing to try Wu Man, 40, and reiterated that the Chinese mainland has the right to arrest and interrogate him. Wu, a Hong Kong resident and British National (Overseas) passport holder, was the subject of a diplomatic stand-off between China and Britain after his "arrest" by Thai police and mainland officers in Bangkok in June 1999, and his summary removal to the mainland. He was extradited to Guangdong in 1999. Wu said after his arrest that he was willing to be extradited back to the Chinese mainland to be tried. He admitted that he had been involved in the kidnap of a Hong Kong tycoon Walter Kwok Ping-sheung in 1997. The penalty for kidnapping offences ranges from 10 years in jail to death.
