The Hands Off Cain delegation completed its mission to Uzbekistan, the second leg of the tour of Central Asian republics, in order to gain consensus for a UN moratorium resolution on capital executions.
The delegation consisted of Benedetto Della Vedova (Lista Bonino MEP), Bruno Mellano (Piedmont regional Parliamentary), Antonio Stango (HOC board member) and Rosanna Degiovanni (Piedmont Radical Party collaborator).
Uzbek parliamentarians stated that with regards to the country's stance on the universal moratorium of the death penalty at the UN General Assembly, the decision could only be made by the government, but they would examine the possibility of a Parliamentary judgement when Parliament next convenes at the end of August (one of the three annual two day plenary sessions of the Oliy Majalis).
The conclusive meeting was with Vice Foreign Minister Vladimir Norov, who underlined his government's commitments in the reduction of capital executions and the Uzbek government's will to arriving at the abolishment of the death penalty.Regarding the vote on the universal moratorium on executions, Norov said that Hands
Off Cain's was the first request to this effect to be made to the Uzbek government and that a decision had not been taken as of yet.
Reserving the right to reply within the forthcoming weeks, Norov did not rule out the possibility that the government could end up abstaining on the matter.
