The head of the Police Federation, Steve Brown, called for a resumption of hanging in the face of increased criminal activity.
Cpl. Errol Bell, 37, was shot in the head by two attackers along busy East Street late on June 17, as he went to buy a meal from a fast-food shop. He was pounced on by two men who demanded his gun and was killed in the ensuing struggle. Bell was the third policeman killed in the past 12 days and the seventh since the start of a bloody year that has seen 409 murders in the Caribbean nation of 2.7 million people.
"The death penalty for convicted murderers is the answer to the crime wave now gripping the country," Brown said.
