The High Court sentenced Othman bin Abdullah, a water taxi operator, to death for drug trafficking. Othman was convicted of trafficking 301.2863 grams of methyl amphetamine, better known as "syabu", on July 23, 1999 at a house in Bandar Seri Begawan. "The penalty for unauthorised possession of syabu for the purpose of trafficking, if the quantity exceeds 250 grams, is death. Accordingly, we order that the defendant be hanged by the neck until he is dead," said Chief Justice Dato Sir Denys Roberts in passing the sentence.
