On November 20, a court condemned Daud bin Naim, 36, a Malaysian truck driver, to hang. Daud was charged with trafficking 1.63kg cannabis, with an estimated street value of $163,394, on December 3, 1998 when he came to Brunei carrying a blue plastic bag. Deputy Public Prosecutor Hj Rozaiman bin Dato Hj Abd Rahman asked for a deterrent sentence as he maintained Brunei was facing a growing drug menace. In his plea of mitigation, Defense Counsel Mohd Shazale bin Mat Salleh said that Daud had a clean record, and a wife and children back home in Lawas to support. Daud was arrested by a team of Narcotics Officers that had conducted an operation near Sri Lambak complex, Berakas in the suburbs of the Brunei capital on December 3, 1998.
