The Hiroshima High Court sentenced a 51-year-old Shozo Nishiyama to death for committing murder and robbery in 1992 while on parole after receiving a life term for a 1973 murder. The sentence came after the Supreme Court in 1999 reversed and remanded the high court's earlier ruling in 1997 that sentenced Nishiyama to life imprisonment. The top court at that time noted there was no choice but the death sentence for a man who committed a second murder-robbery on parole unless there were special circumstances. Nishiyama had been convicted of murdering an 87-year-old woman and stealing 310,000 yen from her in March 1992 while on parole after conspiring with a colleague in Fukuyama, Hiroshima Prefecture.
