The Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Summary or Arbitrary Executions said that reports continue to be received concerning the execution of hundreds of political prisoners detained in penitentiaries through the country. Sources claim that the reported deaths in these facilities are part of the so- called "prison cleansing campaign" ordered by the head of the Special Security Organization. These grave allegations also assert that the detainees were convicted because of their supposed opposition to the Government and after trials that did not meet international standards (E/CN.4/1999/39/Add.1).
