The issue of Fatwa is the cause of major turmoil in Bangladesh after two High Court judges, on January 1, declared it illegal. The Islami Oikya Jote (IOJ), which is a member of the Opposition alliance led by the BNP [Bangladesh Nationalist party], declared these two judges as murtad (the enemy of Islam) and pronounced death sentences on them. During the course of a meeting called by this group, a police constable was killed inside a mosque in Dhaka. The Chairman and the Secretary-General of the IOJ were arrested in connection with this. A group of NGOs under the platform of the United Forum of the Citizens has joined the issue in favour of the High Court judgment against Fatwa, also backed by the ruling Awami league. The IOJ, supported by the BNP has declared a jehad against these NGOs.
