The Italian Chamber of Representatives approved a motion presented by the ruling faction calling for an end to Italian aid programmes, bilateral or multilateral, to Cuba if its "Communist regime" persists in "arbitrary arrests and summary executions."
The minister for Parliamentary Relations (Leader of the House) Carlo Giovanardi, speaking in the Chamber on behalf of the government announced that Italy would review very carefully the rapport between the EU and Cuba when it took over the term-presidency in July.
Giovanardi added that "the Italian government intended to reconsider the continuation of the activity of the Italian cultural institute active in Cuba for years," and that "the government would contemplate the possibility, if Castro's politics continued to be repressive, of launching a European embargo" of the island.
