The Italian Parliament approved a motion against the death penalty, which was signed by all political party leaders. The document obliges the government to agree upon a European initiative with which to re-launch a campaign in favour of a "moratorium on executions". 462 Members of Parliament voted in favour of the motion, with 4 abstentions: Giuseppe Amato, of Forza Italia (centre-right party) and Ettore Pirovano, Daniela Santandrea and Rinaldo Bosco of the Northern League, who approve of capital punishment under certain circumstances.
