The Kagoshima District Court, Japan, sentenced Keishi Nago to death for stabbing to death his sister-in-law and her daughter and seriously injuring her son in 2002. Presiding Judge Hideo Ohara handed down the death sentence against Nago, 34, unemployed, in line with prosecutors' demands, calling the crime "indiscriminate murder." The judge said Nago committed the crime due to a wish to have his older brother feel the loneliness he himself felt at being ignored by the brother. According to the ruling, on August 16, 2002, Nago stabbed Kazumi Nago, 40, the wife of his brother Hirofumi, 44, and their 17-year-old daughter Chihiro and 15-year-old son Kenji with a kitchen knife at around 11 am. Nago, who lived near his brother, attacked the three at the family's home in the town of Isen on Tokunoshima Island, killing Kazumi and Chihiro and seriously injuring Kenji. Prosecutors maintained that Nago perpetrated the crime because he felt hatred for his older brother, imagining that he was being ignored by him, and had aimed to "cause him pain by taking the lives of his family."
