The Kitwe High court, Zambia, sentenced Gerthin Musonda, 28, John Mwenya, 21, Brian Lumamba, 28 and Mabvuto Phiri after convicting them of murdering taxi driver Obby Chama on January 12, 2003.
Justice Kabamba said the quartet should be hanged by the neck until they were pronounced dead.
Earlier in mitigation, Lucane Moono, the lawyer representing Mwenya, the youngest of the convicts, said that the court should have imposed any other sentence other than the mandatory one.
He added that capital punishment had been condemned in the whole world and that Republican President Levy Mwanawasa had also condemned it.
The facts before the court were that on the quartet had murdered Chama and stole a Toyota Sprinter car registration number ACG 4147 worth K19 million belonging to Simon Musonda.
The four were charged with aggravated robbery and murder, which they all denied.
