The Kuwaiti Court of Appeals court commuted to life in prison the death sentence against Sami al-Mutairi, a 25 year old Kuwaiti who killed an American civilian and wounded another in a highway ambush in January 2003
The Kuwaiti Court of Appeals court commuted to life in prison the death sentence against Sami al-Mutairi, a 25 year old Kuwaiti who killed an American civilian and wounded another in a highway ambush in January 2003.
The court also reduced a three-year jail term against two accomplices in the case to two-and-a-half years each. Mutairi had been sentenced to death by the Criminal Court after he confessed to killing the US citizen and wounding the second in a machine-gun attack.
The appeals court did not give the reasons for commuting the death sentence.
Mutairi was arrested in late January 2003 while trying to escape to Saudi Arabia and confessed to killing Michael Rene Pouliot and wounding David Caraway.
He also "confessed he embraced the ideas of al-Qaeda," according to Kuwaiti authorities.
