Since independence in 1945, Indonesian courts had sentenced a total of 70 people to death with 11 of them already executed, an Attorny General's Office (AGO) spokesman said. "The number excludes the three who were convicted in the Bali bombing case recently. Most of the people on death row were involved either in drug trafficking or premeditated murder," said Kemas Yahya Rahman, the AGO's official spokesman.
He said that 25 of those sentenced to death were currently still seeking presidential pardon, 14 a review of their case, 15 an appeal to the supreme court while five others had died.
Among the 11 people already executed were Karta Cahyadibin Yongki who was executed in Jakarta in 1995 in connection with a murder case, Usen in Surabaya, East Java, in 1978, Hengki Tupawel in East Java in 1980, Kusni Kasdut in Surabaya in 1980, and Roestam alias Hasyim in Pamekasan, Madura, in 1985.
Others were Gatot Sutardjo who was executed in Pamekasan in 1985, Sukarman alias Bedjo in Pamekasan in 1987, Adi Saputro in Surabaya in 1992, Katjong Laranu in Palu, Central Sulawesi, in 1995, Fredik Soru and Gerson Panjie in East Nusa Tenggara in 2001. Rahman said the execution of some of the convicts had undergone long delays because their cases were not yet concluded following their requests for presidential pardon, a review of their case or an appeal.
Regarding the Bali bombing case, Rahman said that 25 out 29 suspects in the case had been sentenced, three to death, two to life, six to over 10 years in jail and eight to below 10 years.
"Four are now still under trial. All of the suspects who have been sentenced have appealed the courts' verdicts.
Thus the sentences they had received were not legally final," he said.
