The leader of the Russian Orthodox Church Patriarch Alexi II believes the question of lifting the moratorium on the death penalty in Russia should be decided by legislators.
He admitted to Moscow journalists that he understood those "who raise the question in relation to the recent act of terrorism in Kaspiisk. The loss has been too great, and innocent children accompanying an army brass band were killed."
However, Russia has a moratorium on the death penalty and this means "it should be followed," the patriarch said.
"Clearly the decision on its cancellation should be made by lawmakers," he said, adding that he will look forward to the results of such a consideration.
