The Loyola Death Penalty Resource Center, which had defended many of those on Louisiana's death row and helped to free some who were innocent, was forced to close its doors in 1999 because of lack of funding. The Resource Center had been one of 20 such death penalty assistance centers which lost their federal funding in 1996. The Loyola Center had been able to continue with private funding until this year.
