the Missouri House has given preliminary approval to legislation intended to address some of the concerns raised by U.S. District Judge Fernando Gaitan Jr. who has, in effect, halted executions in his state.
Representative Danie Moore (R-Fulton) sponsors HB 820, which would eliminate much of the secrecy of the execution protocol, but would keep confidential the names of state employees and medical personnel involved in the administration of executions.
Also under the bill, members of the execution team could not be reprimanded by professional licensing boards for their involvement in carrying out the death penalty.
State executions have been on hold since last year, as a court fight continues over an inmate's claim that the lethal injection process is unconstitutionally cruel.
Lethal injection bill is HB820. One more positive vote in the House sends the legislation to the Senate.
