The mood for revenge was growing as ordinary Iraqis demanded that Saddam Hussein be executed in public for crimes against his people. Mohammed al Rubaie, a moneychanger, said: "Please, please, Mr Bush, give him back to us, the Iraqi people. We want him because he has on his hands the blood of all of our brothers and cousins. "He has killed so many people here and it is our custom to have revenge for the blood he has spilled." Many of Iraq's Governing Council also appeared determined the former dictator should hang. Jawad Chalabi, brother of senior council member and would-be Iraqi leader Ahmed, said: "In Iraq it is custom for executions to be carried out by hanging or firing squad... A very large majority of the Governing Council want to see Saddam hanged." Mr Chalabi added: "The Kurds are pushing very hard for execution. So are the Shi'ite religious leaders.
