The National Human Rights Commission an independent state human rights body, comprising 11 members was launched

The National Human Rights Commission an independent state human rights body, comprising 11 members was launched. President Kim Dae-jung, a strong human rights advocate who won the 2000 Nobel Peace Prize, signed the commission act in May.
The commission is empowered to monitor, investigate and take steps to correct human rights concerns such as discrimination, ill-treatment in prisons, the death penalty and repression of conscientious objectors' rights.
