The number of executions in Saudi Arabia has increased sharply over the past year, with 99 carried out in 1999, compared to 29 for the whole of 1998. Fifty-nine foreign nationals have been put to death including 12 Pakistanis, 10 Nigerians (3 of them women, for drug trafficking), 9 Afghans, 6 Indians, as well as nationals of Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Syria, Jordan, Ethiopia, Chad and Yemen.
