The oldest person on death row in California, Raymond Fredrick Johns, died of natural causes Sunday morning, said Vernell Crittendon, spokesman for San Quentin State Prison. Johns, 79, had been sick for months and on March 3, he was checked into Novato Community Hospital, where he died. Johns had been convicted of murdering his wife in 1980, and murdering his girlfriend in 1989. From 1978, when capital punishment was reinstated in California, to 2002, only 10 people have been executed in the state while 22 died of natural causes and 13 committed suicide. The oldest death row inmate at San Quentin now is 76-year-old Fred Douglas, who killed a 16-year-old girl and a 19-year-old woman in the early 1980s.California has the largest death row in the USA, with 634 inmates.
