Joseph Anthony Barrett was given a death penalty sentence by a jury in the Imperial County Courthouse in El Centro. Barrett, 33, was found guilty on Jan. 14 of the stabbing death of his Calipatria State Prison cellmate, Thomas Kent Richmond, 23, on April 9, 1996. Barrett has been incarcerated since age 16, when he was arrested for the murder of a high school teacher in San Francisco in 1986, and sentenced to life.
