The opposition Grand National Party (GNP) blasted the government's "soft" North Korea policy, claiming that a North Korean defector was executed in public recently, after he had been abducted back to Pyongyang in October 2000. "The government seems to care more about North Korea than its own people," said Chang Kwang-keun, a GNP vice spokesman. "Defectors are also our citizens to be protected."The defector, known as Yoo Tae-joon, 33, had run away from the Communist North in November 1998. He reportedly went to China in June 2000 in order to bring his wife, who lived near the Chinese border. Yoo was arrested while trying to meet his wife and publicly executed early this year by North Korean authorities.
