The outgoing prime minister, Viktor Orban, said that Hungary should re-introduce the death penalty. Asked why he changed his mind after having voted for the abolition of the death penalty himself, Orban said that seeing and talking to the relatives of the recent bank robbery in which eight people were murdered had convinced him that Hungary would never be the same again from the point of view of public safety.
He said that he was aware that the EU opposes the death penalty, but he added that EU might change its mind, especially in view of the antiterrorist struggle, and allow member states to decide on their own.
Hungary will push Brussels to do so.
