The Philippine Supreme Court commuted the death sentence of Hideshi Suzuki, a 47-year-old Japanese man convicted of drug trafficking, to life imprisonment. The court also reduced the fine of 10 million pesos (about $180,800) imposed on Suzuki to 1 million pesos. Suzuki was arrested in 1994 for carrying 1.9 kilograms of marijuana as he tried to board a Manila-bound plane at an airport in the central Philippines' Negros island.
