a former congressman and six farmers were sentenced to death in the Philippines for the 1997 killing of two brothers in Mindoro province.
Quezon City regional trial court Judge Ma. Teresa Yadao handed down the death penalty to former Occidental Mindoro representative Jose Villarosa, Gelito Bautista, Eduardo Hermoso, Mario Tobias, Manolito Matricio, Josue Ungsod, and Ruben Balaguer.
Prosecutors said the six farmers, also known as the "Mamburao Six," were members of the New People's Army who connived with Villarosa for the murder of Michael and Paul Quintos on December 13, 1997 in Mamburao town. Prosecutors said the motive behind the killing was the political rivalry between the Villarosa and Quintos families.
