The Philippines Supreme Court (SC) confirmed the death sentence imposed by an Ormoc court on a farmer who raped and killed Angelina Abapo, a 22-year-old woman, in 1996. To be added to the long list of death row inmates is 30-year-old Pablo Tablon.
Records showed that upon arrest Tablon admitted the crime but retracted his statements during the trial, saying his testimonies were obtained against his will. The SC, however, dismissed his arguments due to indications that "constitutional safeguards ... (were) adequately complied with" when he made the confession.
