The Philippines Supreme Court stressed the importance of DNA evidence as it denied with finality an appeal by a convicted rapist. It affirmed the death penalty imposed on Gerrico S. Vallejo by a Cavite court which found him guilty of raping and killing a nine-year-old neighbour in 1999.
Vallejo questioned the reliability of DNA analysis and branded DNA testing in the country as "junk science.
"The SC said "the DNA profile found in the vaginal swabs taken from the victim which matched the DNA profile of (the accused), prove (guilt) beyond reasonable doubt ... " It said "no one reading the scientific papers presented at the Third Convention and Seminar of the Philippine Judges association ... can doubt the credibility of DNA tests done in the Philippines.
