The Polish Parliament permanently abolished the death penalty when the Diet adopted a new Criminal Code on June 6, 1997. The new code came into force on January 1, 1998. There had been no executions since 1988. The new Criminal Code provides for life imprisonment. Courts of first instance may add a condition to such a sentence, making it impossible for prisoners to request release on parole. In this event, prisoners may request a remission of sentence from the judge responsible for the execution of sentences once they have served 25 years of their sentence.
