The relevant Malaysian authorities must find alternative actions to supersede capital punishment imposed for certain crimes in the country, Parliamentary Secretary to the National Unity and Social Development Ministry Datuk Veerasingam said. The imposition of capital punishment alone had proven ineffective as the rate of crimes such as rape, incest and drug abuse was still high despite various severe actions taken against offenders over the years, he added. "Capital punishment has not brought about the required change that we wanted. If that's been the case, then there's no crime at all because there was capital punishment for everything in the early days," Veerasingam said.
