Hanif Hawlader, 27, of Damudarkati village in Uzirpur, Bangladesh, was sentenced to death by a court in Barisal, Bangladesh, for killing his wife for dowry. According to the prosecution, Hanif married Tanzila, 19, and took Tk 30,000 as dowry from her parents. He later demanded a bicycle. As Tanzila's parents could not meet his demand, Hanif started torturing her. On April 18, 2002, Hanif severely beat up Tanzila, leaving her dead on the spot.
