the Rights and Liberties Protection Department is trying to form a national consensus to get rid of state executions in Thailand. Pithaya Jimawat, director general of the department which falls under the Justice Ministry, pointed out that Thailand remained one of the declining number of countries which put prisoners to death. Formal statistics are rarely given but Thai executions by lethal injection probably number only a handful each year. However, hundreds are detained in prisons under sentence of death even as they await a royal pardon or amelioration of sentence. More than 140 of the world’s 198 states have abandoned executions. They are widely regarded as barbaric, never bring happiness even to the relatives of the victims, and always carry the risk of innocent people being put to death.
