The ruling Millennium Democratic Party urged the government to take sterner measures against organized crime, Party Spokesman Chon Yong-hak said.
Under current South Korean law, the head of a criminal organization could face the death penalty, life in jail or a prison term of over 10 years. The corresponding punishment for simply being a gang member is two years in prison or more.
