The Shanghai No 1 Intermediate People's Court announced its verdict in an ivory smuggling case, imposing the death penalty on Li Wenjian, with a two-year probation, and sentencing Liang Zhiqiang to life imprisonment. The duo were arrested for smuggling 3,334.6 kilograms of ivory valued at 178 million yuan (US$21.45 million), hidden in timber products imported from Africa in August 2002. The ivory was found by officials at Shanghai customs on August 30.
