The Sikh body Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) called upon the Federal government to abolish the death penalty saying it would raise India's image in the eyes of the world.
"If the Indian Government also dispenses with the death penalty, it will certainly be appreciated and acknowledged worldwide," he said. The SGPC also announced its decision to protest the Supreme Court order confirming the death sentence of Davinder Pal Singh Bhullar for an assassination bid on former Indian Youth Congress chief M S Bitta. The assassination bid took place outside the Youth Congress office in New Delhi, killing 12 people in 1993.
