The House of Lords refused leave for the Indian government to appeal against a High Court refusal to extradite Nadeem Akhtar Saifi, a top Indian movie music director, who could face execution if returned to his homeland and ultimately convicted. He is wanted for the killing of music producer Gulshan Kumar in Bombay in August 1997. The Law Lords Slyn, Hope and Scott, backed Lord Justice Rose's ruling that it would be unjust to return Saifi to India because there was a risk that evidence had been "tainted", making a fair trial in India impossible.
